Au chalet de Ron et Lu à Perth, Ontario

Grâce à la générosité de Ron et Lu, oncle et tante de Katrine, nous avons passé une belle fin de semaine à leur chalet situé à Perth en Ontario, non loin de Smiths Falls, au bord du lac Christie.

Thanks to the generosity of Katrine's aunt Lu and uncle Ron, we spent a wonderful weekend at their cottage in Perth, Ontario, on Christie Lake.

À notre arrivée vendredi après midi, nous avons pu aller nous baigner avant d'aller préparer le souper.

When we arrived, it was nice enough outside that we could go for a little swim before dinner.

Malgré le temps gris et pluvioteux du samedi matin, nous sommes allé faire une petite ballade à pied, puis Nicolas est allé faire une longue promenade en kayak. C'était très zen!

Despite the gray and rainy weather on Saturday, we went for a walk outside and Nick went for a kayak ride on his own. It was a very peaceful "zen" kind of day!

Au courant de l'après midi, les parents de Katrine sont arrivés à leur tour. Nous avons fait la visite du petit chalet adjacent au chalet principal, qui a été récemment rénové. Il est utilisé lorsque le nombre d'invités dépasse la capacité du chalet principal. À notre connaissance, c'est le seul endroit où la 'bécosse' possède un chandelier!

During the afternoon, Katrine's parents arrived at the cottage. We visited the neighbouring cottage (still referred to as "Aunt Marie's", due to its previous occupant), that has been recently renovated. The Mitchell family's cottage is a popular spot. When there are so many visitors that they can't all sleep in the main cottage, they can now go to the new-and-improved Aunt Marie's cottage. To our knowledge, this may be the only outhouse with a chandelier!


Bien entendu, une visite au chalet ne serait complète sans le classique saut dans le lac du haut du gros rocher!

Of course no visit to the Mitchell cottage would be complete without jumping off the Big Rock. Note that the camera batteries died JUST before Katrine jumped in the water, but she really did jump!

Cueillette de fraises et Festival au Galop

On this July 1st weekend, we were a busy family, but we had a lot of fun!

On Friday, we went strawberry picking at a little farm near where we live. Least year, Julianne pretty much just ate berries and sat in the field. This year, what a difference! She picked berries and put them in her own little container and she also helped us fill our basket. Making the most of our haul, we have made crisp, pancakes, eaten strawberries in our cereal, on our ice cream and frozen berries for later use.

Le long congé de la fête du Canada fut occupé mais amusant!

Vendredi, nous sommes allés cueillir des fraises dans une petite ferme près de chez nous, dans la municipalité des Cèdres. Comparément à l'année passée, où Julianne s'est simplement assise sur le sol pour manger des fraises, cette année elle a cueilli des fraises comme une grande dans un contenant et nous a aidé à remplir notre panier. Katrine a fait un croustillant aux fraises, des crêpes, après en avoir mangé dans nos céréales et avec de la crème glacée, nous avons congelé le reste pour plus tard.

On Saturday, Nick was working and Katrine went to the Festival au Galop in St-Lazare with Julianne. This is the second year for this festival, which is an amazingly well-organized event put on in our very town. The theme is all things horses, Western, cowboys, saloon... you get the idea. The festival showcases the significant equestrian aspect of our town.

Samedi Nicolas travaillait. Katrine et Julianne ont profité de leur journée pour visiter le site du festival au Galop de Saint-Lazare, qui présentait toutes sortes d'activité en lien avec l'équitation. Il s'agit de la deuxième édition de ce festival, qui met en relief le côté équestre de la ville.

Sunday, Katrine went and volunteered all day (on a very hot, sunny day!) at the Festival for the Prenatal and Young Family Centre. The Centre had an obstacle course, and a tent full of toys for children and parents to stop and take a break to play. Nicolas and Julianne went to a swimming class, and then walked around the festival site on their own. They even saw a jousting match. What a great festival! Can't wait to go back next year (perhaps minus the volunteering part??). 

Dimanche, Katrine a fait du bénévolat toute la journée (qui s'est avérée être chaude et ensoleillée) au festival. En effet, le Centre Prénatal et Jeunes Familles avait un parcours à obstacles ainsi qu'une tente remplie de jouets, afin que les familles puissent faire une pause pendant la journée. Julianne et papa ont commencé la journée avec le cours de natation de mademoiselle, puis sont allés sur le site du festival profiter des activités. Ils ont même assisté à un spectacle de joute équestre plutôt impressionnant. Quel beau festival! 

Camping de frères à Wescott Beach State Park

Comme c'est la tradition depuis maintenant plusieurs années, nous sommes allés camper en compagnie de Philippe, Renaud et de leur famille respectives. Nous étions donc un joyeux groupe de 14 personnes!

Renaud avait suggéré comme destination le parc de Wescott Beach, situé au bord du lac Ontario, un peu au sud de la région des Milles-Iles. Cet endroit s'est avéré magnifique, surtout grâce au fait que nous disposions chacun d'un emplacement au bord de l'eau.

Following a tradition that has been in place for many years, we went camping with Renaud and Philippe and their families last weekend. Everyone was there - we were a total of 14 people! Renaud has suggested Wescott Beach, situated on Lake Ontario, just South of the Thousand Islands region (on the United States side). This was a wonderful campground, mostly because we each had a waterfront site.

La température agréable du lac Ontario nous a permis de passer tout l'après midi du vendredi à jouer dans l'eau. Julianne a particulièrement apprécié le sable de la plage...

The warm temperature of the lake and the air allowed us to spend a lot of time in the water on Friday afternoon. Julianne particularly loved playing in the sand.

Philippe et son groupe sont arrivés plus tard en soirée, ce qui ne nous a pas empêché de faire griller quelques guimauves sur le feu.

Here we all are roasting marshmallows over the fire on the Friday evening. We had another fire with some s'mores the following night.

Samedi, nous en avons profité pour explorer le camping. Julianne a particulièrement apprécié le parc.

Dimanche, nous avons joué un peu dans l'eau avant de lever le camp. Nous sommes arrêté pique-niquer dans le petit village de Sackets Harbor, avant de reprendre la route vers la maison.

Sunday, we played in the water and packed up our sites. We stopped in the picturesque town of Sackett's Harbour to have a picnic and some amazing ice cream before heading back home.

Fête de la famille, Fly-in breakfast et Fête intergnénérationelle

Ouf! Plein d'événements cette fin de semaine!

Samedi matin, après le cours de danse de Julianne, nous sommes allés à la Fête de la famille de l'aéroport Montréal-Trudeau. Beaucoup d'activités nous y attendaient, dont une démonstration du maitre-chien, qui nous a montré comment leur équipier canin peut repérer des explosifs dissimulés, plusieurs jeux dont des jeux gonflable, un babyfoot et une table de pool géants, des démonstrations de la part du service d'incendie, des camions de déneigement, de dégivrage et de pompier, en plus du kiosque portant sur le travail de Nicolas à l'aéroport. Nous avons également eu le droit à un repas offert par le service de traiteur ainsi qu'à la visite du camion de crème glacée!

Whoa, what a weekend!

Saturday morning, after Julianne's dance class, we went to Family Day at the Montreal-Trudeau airport (an activity for families of airport employees). There were many kiosks and stations, from a "sniffer dog" demonstration to giant pool and foosball games, to bouncy games for Julianne, to firetrucks, de-icing trucks and of course, the Falcon Environmental Services hawk and falcon! We also had a buffet lunch and got a treat from the ice cream truck.

Samedi soir nous avons reçu un ami de Nicolas à souper: Sangria, frites au fines herbes du jardin et parmesan,  deux saumons sur planche de cèdre (Garam Masala et Citron et herbes méditerranéennes), et brownies maison. De très belles conversations auxquelles William a participé avec grand intérêt, mais on s'est couché tard!!!

Saturday evening, we had Nick's friend Mario over for supper. On the menu: sangria, herb and parmesan fries, two kinds of salmon on the barbecue (garam masala and mediterranean herb) and homemade brownies. Also, some fascinating conversations in which even William participated, but we got to bed very late....

Dimanche matin, nous avons poursuivi avec la thématique 'aéroport' avec le Fly-in Breakfast de l'aéroport de St-Lazare. Après ce copieux déjeuner, nous sommes allés voir les nombreux avions en démonstration et assisté à plusieurs décollages et atterrissages. 

Sunday morning, we continued the airport theme by attending the Fly-In Breakfast at the tiny Saint-Lazare airport. The breakfast was delicious (well, for those who could eat it anyway :( ) and we had the chance to see small aircraft, old cars and helicopters up close, as well as quite a few takeoffs and landings. A bit chilly outside, though!!

Finalement, nous avons participé à la Fête intergénérationelle de Saint-Lazare, un nouvel événement crée dans le but de promouvoir la politique familiale de la ville ainsi que son plan d'action, notamment la mise en place d'un conseil des sages au sein de la ville. Parme les activités organisées, jeux de société interactifs, courses de boites à savon, jeux gonflables, repas et collations santé, etc. 

Finally, on Sunday afternoon, we went to the Intergenerational event in Saint-Lazare, a new activity created to promote the launch of our town's Family Policy and multi-step action plan ( e.g. the creation of a council of seniors to help make town decisions, etc.). Among the offerings during today's event: a soap box derby, more bouncy games, free healthy snacks, some not-so-healthy hot dogs and chips, board games for young and old alike to play together, etc. 

Longue fin de semaine dans les Adirondacks

Pour profiter de la belle température et du long week-end, nous avons décidé de nous évader dans la belle région des Adirondacks, un de nos endroits préférés. Nous sommes partis samedi matin après le cours de danse de Julianne, et après un trajet sans incident nous avons installé notre campement au camping de Meacham Lake, un des endroits prisés par Isabelle et Renaud lors de leurs sorties.

To take advantage of the long weekend and the wonderfully warm weather (finally!), we decided to take off to one of our favourite places, the Adirondacks. We left on Saturday morning after Julianne's dance class and decided to camp one night at Meacham Lake, which is a regular spot for (Nick's brother) Renaud and his family, as well as one of Katrine's patients and his family. It came recommended!

Après une visite du camping, un tour au parc et une soirée auprès du feu, nous avons quitté le dimanche matin en direction de Lake Placid. En chemin, nous avons fait une halte à Saranac Lake afin de gravir le mont Baker (altitude 2457'). Il s'agit d'une randonnée que nous avions réalisée auparavant, alors que Julianne avait moins d'un an! Cette fois-ci, elle a passé une partie du trajet hors du sac à dos, grimpant de ses propres pattes...

After visiting the campground a bit, playing at the park, getting eaten alive by black flies (!) and having some fireside time, we went to bed. We hit the road for Lake Placid the next day. This is a meaningful spot for us because we spent our "baby moon" here just before Julianne arrived (early) and we came back with her when she was under a year old. We love this area. We stopped to climb Mount Baker in Saran Lake (altitude 2457 feet). This was a hike that we did with Julianne when she was about 10 months old, and this time she got out of the backpack at one point and hiked on her own. Ah, time flies, doesn't it?

Après la randonnée, nous avons dîné au pied de la montagne. Nous y avons rencontré un couple de campeurs en Westfalia que l'on avait connu quelques années plus tôt, au camping d'Assateague dans le Maryland! Quelle drôle de coincidence!

Nous avons ensuite continué notre chemin vers Lake Placid. Pendant que Julianne faisait la sieste dans le campeur, Katrine a pu magasiner en toute liberté. Puis ensuite ce fût le tour de Nicolas. Une fois les emplettes complétées, nous nous sommes remis en route vers notre camping, Wilmington Notch State Campground, situé à quelques minutes de Lake Placid.

After our hike, we had lunch at the base of the mountain. Strange coincidence: we ran into a Quebec family that we had met in Assateague, Maryland almost three years ago! Then we continued on to Main street, Lake Placid. Julianne napped in the van, top popped up, windows down, and we each took turns going shopping in our favourite shops (popcorn shop, fudge, clothes!). Once we had finished, we headed out for Wilmington Notch State Campground, a few minutes away.

Le camping est situé sur le bord de la rivière Ausable, connue pour ses chutes et canyons. Nous sommes donc descendus jusqu'au bord de l'eau afin de voir les chutes de plus près.

The campsite is situated at Ausable river's edge, known for canyons and waterfalls. We took the time to go see the waterfall, which was worth it. Turns out Julianne LOVES waterfalls!

Lundi matin nous sommes repartis en direction de la maison. Nous avons quand même profité de la belle journée pour faire halte au Adirondacks Visitors Interpretive Center (VIC). Le bâtiment n'était pas ouvert, mais nous avons pu explorer quelques-uns des sentiers aménagés avec de nombreuses passerelles et points d'observation.

Monday morning, we left to head home to Canada. We took a little bit of time to enjoy the nice day and go to the Visitor's Interpretive Centre (VIC). Unfortunately, it was closed, but we took a few trails that included some nice bridges, lookout points and an observation tower.

Nous y avons dîné, avant de rentrer à Montréal, sans oublier d'arrêter à Malone déguster une bonne crème glacée!

We had lunch right here and then returned home, but not without having same delicious ice cream in Malone before crossing the border!
