Vacances en août 2014/ August 2014 vacation

We had a whirlwind two weeks' vacation in August, taking us to various places in Ontario. We started with a visit to Toronto for the big birthday celebration (Great Nana and Katrine). We had wonderful lobster and a great selection of desserts, thanks to Ron and Lu. The evening went by very quickly, what with two babies keeping us busy and with Christopher getting ready to fly to Turkey that night.

Nos vacances du mois d'août nous ont permis de visiter pleins d'endroits en Ontario. Nous avons commencé nos vacances à Toronto, où nous avons célébré l'anniversaire de Katrine et de sa grand maman Nana (son 101e!), puisque les deux sont nées le 11 août. Nous avons mangé de délicieux homards et une belle selection de desserts chez Lu et Ron, tante et oncle de Katrine. Nana était très contente de voir ses deux arrière-petites filles Abbie et Julianne, ainsi que toute sa famille.

While in Toronto, we visited Ripley's Aquarium. We all agreed that our favourite part was the tunnel where fish and sharks swam in a tank right in front of us and sometimes right above our heads!
We also took Julianne in the subway for the first time. She seemed to enjoy herself!

Le lendemain nous sommes allé visiter l'aquarium de Toronto. C'était la première sortie de Julianne en métro et elle a bien aimé son expérience: elle regardait partout!!! Nous avons surtout aimé la partie de l'aquarium avec le tunnel dans le bassin des requins, c'était grandiose de voir tout ces grands prédateurs passer si près de nous...

The next stop was Presqu'Ile Provincial Park for two days of camping. The weather did not cooperate too well and we mostly had wind and rain, including one chilly night in the van, but we still managed to get out and walk around the point, see the lighthouse and buy souvenirs in the gift shop.

Par la suite nous avons passé deux jours en camping au parc provincial de Presqu'Île. La météo n'a pas toujours été au rendez-vous mais nous avons tout de même exploré les sentiers et la pointe qui comprend un phare et une petite boutique charmante.

We stayed with Natasha and Scott in Kingston for a night, where we were able to see Katrine's friend Sarah and we celebrated Katrine's and Sarah's birthdays. It was lovely to see all of the children together (Finn, Aida, Lucas, Emily, William and Julianne) and as always, Scott and Natasha were wonderful hosts!

En route vers notre prochaine destination, nous nous sommes arrêté vendredi soir chez Natasha et Scott à Kingston. Ils nous ont reçu avec leur habituelle grande générosité, et cet arrêt nous a permis de nous reposer, de laver du linge et de refaire nos provisions.

Next, we got on a houseboat in Portland, Ontario that would be our home for a week. Well, 32 feet sounded big in theory, but when you get four people and their belongings (including a playpen) into a houseboat, it doesn't seem so big anymore. It took some getting used to certain things (close quarters, no counter space, where to put Julianne so she didn't get into trouble, how to use the weird shower), but all in all, we liked boating life. We were newbies when we went through our first locks, but by the end of the trip, we were pros! Katrine and Nick took turns driving the boat (whose speed was about 8 km per hour, so it was quite easy to drive), and it was fun to stop in various places, some larger and some very small, to explore our surroundings. Julianne spent a lot of time in the backpack and we truly think it was our best purchase for her. She loves it, and we can go many more places with a backpack than we can with a stroller!

Samedi soir nous sommes arrivé à Portland où nous avons pris livraison de notre bateau maison. Puisque celui-ci était déjà prêt, nous avons pu monter à bord immédiatement, et embarquer notre bagage en prévision de notre départ dimanche matin. Nous avons dus apprivoiser l'espace puisque finalement 32' ce n'est pas très grand pour 4 personnes, mais avec un peu de pratique nous sommes parvenus à être assez efficace pour préparer à manger, prendre nos repas, et organiser les dodos.

Les amarrages ainsi que l'utilisation des écluses ont également requis un certain apprentissage mais éventuellement nous sommes devenus de bons marins! William a appris à amarrer le bateau au quai, Katrine à piloter le navire et Julianne... à nous regarder faire en jouant dans son parc!

Ce genre de voyage nous a permis de visiter des petits coins charmants, et nous avons particulièrement apprécié l'utilisation du sac à dos porte bébé qui nous a permis d'explorer sans être encombré par une poussette. Et en plus Julianne adore être dans cette position!

Vermont

La dernière semaine du mois de juin, nous avons fait du camping au Little River State Park dans l'état de Vermont, avec Renaud et Philippe.

The last weekend in June, we camped with Nick's two brothers, Renaud and Philippe, and their families, at Little River State Park in Vermont.

Nous nous sommes baignés dans la rivière pour se rafraîchir.

Nous avons fait de la randonnée sur un petit sentier nommé le Nature Trail. Occasion parfaite pour essayer le nouveau sac à dos pour transporter Julianne!

We took a small hike along the Nature Trail.  Perfect occasion to try out the new backpack to take Julianne hiking with us!

Le Vermont est connu pour plusieurs produits faits localement. À Waterbury, nous avons visité une fromagerie, une chocolaterie et une cidrerie (2 photos ci-dessous).
Vermont is known for many locally-produced goods. We visited a cheese shop, a chocolate factory and an apple cider factory (2 pictures below).

 Et nous avons gardé le meilleur en dernier... l'usine de fabrication de crème glacée Ben and Jerry!!
And we saved the best for last... the Ben and Jerry's ice cream factory!

Il y avait même une dégustation à la fin de la visite (il y avait une option sans gluten pour Katrine, qui n'est pas dans la photo).

There was even a tasting at the end of the tour (with gluten-free option for Katrine, not shown in the photo).

Nous avons tellement aimé notre visite que nous avons acheté de la crème glacée pour manger dans l'auto en revenant chez nous.

We liked our visit so much that we bought ice cream to eat in the car on the way home.

Chalet Thetford Mines

La fin de semaine du 21 au 23 juin, nous avons fait notre pèlerinage annuel au chalet de Denise et François, à Thetford Mines.  Comme d'habitude, Nicolas et Jean-François ont fait du ski nautique et du wakeboard. Il y a eu des balades en trippe, en motomarine et en pédalo. Pascale et Maxence ont bien aimé passer du temps avec Julianne qui, elle, a bien apprécié être dehors, même si elle était trop petite pour faire des activités dans l'eau cette année.

On the weekend of June 21-23, we took our annual trip to Nick's aunt and uncle's cottage in Thetford Mines, east of Montreal. The usual activities of wake boarding, waterskiing, inner tubing and pedal boating were enjoyed by many. Nick's cousin Jean-François has two young girls who very much enjoyed spending time with Julianne who, despite being too little to partake in water activities, seemed to enjoy her time outdoors.

Camping en Outaouais

Nous avons fait du camping pour la première fois avec Julianne la fin de semaine du 23 mai au Domaine de l'Ange Gardien, près de Gatineau. C'était en lien avec le rassemblement des propriétaires de New West, mais nous ne nous sommes pas joints au groupe pour la plupart des activités. Nous voulions surtout voir si Julianne était prête à camper dans la van, et notre guerrière nous a montré encore une fois qu'elle est prête à tout!

We brought Julianne on her first camping trip in the Gatineau region on the weekend of May 23rd. We chose this area because it was the get-together of owners of New West vehicles, but we did not take part in most of the organized activities with the rest of the group. Our main goal was to see if Miss Julianne would like camping, and like the warrior that she is, she showed us that she's ready for anything!

Nous avons profité du fait d'être dans la région pour rendre visite à Philippe ainsi qu'à Jean Marcotte et Marie Delisle. Julianne a bien fait ça dans son siège d'auto, installé à l'arrière!

We visited some family members while we were in the area. Julianne did very well riding in her car seat, in the back of the van!

 Nous avons terminé la fin de semaine en allant au baptême de Camille. Nous n'avons pas de photos de la cérémonie, mais voici des photos de nous, habillés chic pour l'occasion.

We ended the weekend by going to the baptism of Nick's cousin's daughter, Camille. We don't have pictures of the actual ceremony, but we do have pictures of us, dressed up for the occasion.

Toronto for Mother's Day/pour la Fête des mères!

Nous avons entrepris notre premier voyage avec Julianne. Nous sommes allés à Toronto, en passant en premier par Kingston pour voir nos amis Scott et Natasha ainsi que leurs enfants Finn et Aida. Voici Aida (20 mois) et Finn ( 4 ans) qui jouent dans le carré de sable.

We took our first road trip with Julianne. We went to Toronto, stopping first in Kingston to see our friends Natasha and Scott and their children Finn and Aida. Here are Aida (20 months) and Finn (4 years) playing in their sandbox.

Le lendemain, une fois à Toronto, nous sommes allés voir la grand-mère de Katrine, qui n'avait pas encore vu son arrière-petite-fille Julianne! Elle avait hâte de la prendre dans ses bras!

The next day, we arrived in Toronto and went straight to see Nana (also known as "Great Nana Gerry"), who had not yet met her great-granddaughter. She was so excited to hold Julianne in her arms!

Nous sommes restés chez Natalie, la soeur de Katrine, Simon (le mari de Natalie) et leur fille Abigail ("Abbie"), qui a 16 mois. Dans cette photo, Abbie semble dire "Qui est ce bébé qui est sur mon mini-divan avec moi?". Julianne semble être très heureuse avec sa cousine.

We stayed with Nat, Simon and baby Abbie, who is now 16 months old. In the photo below, Abbie seems to be saying "Who is this strange baby on the couch with me?".  Julianne seems very happy with her cousin.

Pour la fête des mères, nous sommes allés à une boulangerie qui fait des pâtisseries sans gluten, ce qui était le cadeau parfait pour Katrine et Natalie, qui ne mangent pas de gluten! Katrine est contente de ses achats!

For Mother's Day, we went to a gluten-free bakery, which was the perfect gift for gluten-free Nat and Kat!

Baptême de Julianne

Le 4 mai dernier, nous avons réuni tous les membres de nos familles pour un événement très spécial: le baptême de Julianne.

On May 4th, we invited our families to attend a very special event: Julianne's baptism.

Le baptême a eu lieu à la paroisse de Mamie Louise (à l'église Sainte-Suzanne). Grâce à ses connexions, nous avons eu droit à l'église pour nous tout seul!

The baptism took place at St-Suzanne parish (Nicolas' mom's church). Thanks to her connections, we had the church to ourselves!

Comme parrain et marraine, nous avons choisi Renaud (frère de Nicolas) et Natalie (soeur de Katrine)

We chose Nicolas' brother Renaud to be the godfather and Katrine's sister Natalie to be the godmother.

Nous avons fait une magnifique réception chez Louise et nous remercions tous ceux et toutes celles qui ont participé à la cuisine, le service, la préparation et l'exécution de cette réception! Voici Marie-Pierre avec son gâteau incroyable qu'elle a fait et décoré elle-même, incluant les fleurs!

We had a wonderful reception at Louise's house following the ceremony. Thank you to all who helped with cooking, serving, preparation and execution of the event. Above is Marie-Pierre, posing with the cake she made and decorated herself, including the sugar flowers!
