Semaine de relâche 2014

Pour la relâche scolaire, nous sommes allés au chalet de Nicole à Saint-Sauveur, au bord du Lac des Becs-Scies. C'était la première sortie de plusieurs journées de Julianne et elle a fait ça comme une grande! 

For Spring Break, we went to Nick's aunt's cottage. It was Julianne's first time being away from home for a few days. She was very happy!  

Voici Julianne à sa première sortie en raquettes. C'était une journée magnifique sur le lac gelé! Katrine en a profité pour essayer ses nouveaux skis.

This was Julianne's first snowshoe outing. What a beautiful day!  Nick was on the snowshoes and Katrine used her brand-new cross-country skis.

Philippe et Chantal ont gentiment accepté de surveiller Julianne, ce qui nous a permis de faire une longue balade en forêt.

Nick's brother and sister-in-law, Philippe and Chantal, graciously accepted to watch Julianne while we took a lovely long walk in the forest.

Voici Philippe et Chantal après leur balade en ski sur le lac. Leurs trois grandes filles ont préféré rester sagement dans le chalet à s'amuser et faire des devoirs.

Ski au Chanteclerc

Nous avons profité des belles conditions hivernales pour aller faire du ski dans les Laurentides, à la station de ski Chanteclerc. Pour l'occasion, Renaud et Jérome se sont joint à nous pour la journée. Voici quelques images de notre journée:

Julianne!

On November 14th at 2:11 pm, we had a new member added to our family. Julianne Louise Casgrain was slated to be born around December 31st, but baby had other ideas! Mommy's water broke on November 3rd and she was kept in hospital on bed rest to delay delivery. Doctors were hoping to get baby to 34 weeks gestation but again, Julianne thought differently! She arrived with fanfare at just under 4 pounds and is thriving in the NICU at the Jewish General Hospital, breathing on her own and slowly growing.

Le 14 novembre à 14h11, nous avons accueilli un nouveau membre de la famille! Julianne Louise Casgrain était prévue aux alentours du 31 décembre, mais bébé a décidé qu'elle avait trop hâte de nous rencontrer. Maman a perdu ses eaux le 3 novembre et elle est restée à l'hôpital pour tenter de retarder l'accouchement, mais après dix jours, bébé a décidé qu'elle voulait venir au monde! Mademoiselle Julianne pesait presque 4 lbs à la naissance et elle fait présentement un petit séjour aux soins intensifs pour grandir un peu avant de venir nous rejoindre à la maison.

Nous apprenons tranquillement comment prendre soin de notre cocotte, qui est tellement petite! Elle a déjà rencontré son grand frère et ses grands-parents, et elle a hâte de rencontrer le reste de la famille, lorsqu'elle sera rendue à la maison.

We are slowly learning how to take care of our little sweetheart, who is very tiny! She has met her older brother and her grandparents, and she is excited to meet the rest of her family, once she is at home.

Whiteface mountain, Saranac Lake, Meacham Lake

10-12 octobre, 2013: Whiteface Mountain, Saranac Lake, Meacham Lake

Nous avons emprunté le Veterans Memorial Highway, qui nous amène au pied de l'ascenseur pour se rendre au sommet de Whiteface Mountain (élévation 4872 pieds).

We took the Veterans Memorial Highway up Whiteface Mountain, then took an elevator to the summit (4872 feet).

En redescendant nous sommes arrêtés pour un pic-nic avec vue panoramique! 

On our way down, we stopped for a picnic with a view!

Le lendemain, nous avons quitté Lake Placid et nous nous sommes arrêtés au petit village de Saranac Lake.

The next day, we left Lake Placid and stopped in the little village of Saranac Lake.

Après une nuit tranquille au petit camping de Charlie's Inn Junction à Lake Clear, nous sommes allés passer la journée à Meacham Lake avec la famille de Renaud, puis nous sommes retournés à la maison en passant par Malone, NY et Huntingdon, Qc - un trajet très pittoresque.

Before crossing the border, we stopped to visit Renaud and his family, who were camping at Meacham Lake this Thanksgiving weekend. We ate lunch with them and walked around the campsite. Another beautiful Fall day! We drove home through Malone, NY and Huntingdon, Qc (no one at the border!).

Lake Placid, NY

Lake Placid, New York, 8-11 octobre 2013

Nous sommes restés quelques jours au High Peaks Resort à Lake Placid, un hôtel magnifique!

We stayed a few days at the High Peaks Resort in Lake Placid (thanks Scott and Natasha for the recommendation!). What a fabulous hotel!

L'hôtel avait des embarcations disponibles. Nous avons donc profité du temps magnifique pour faire du kayak sur Mirror Lake.

The hotel provided free access to watercrafts, so we took advantage of the gorgeous day to do some kayaking on Mirror Lake. 

Nous nous sommes promenés sur la rue principale, nous avons magasiné et nous avons fait une petite pause sur des chaises Adirondack au bord de l'eau.

We did some shopping along Main Street and took a break to sit in some Adirondack chairs (a local specialty) by the water.

Pendant notre séjour à Lake Placid, nous avons visité plusieurs sites Olympiques, tels que la piste de bobsled et les sauts de ski. Nous avons même vu des athlètes en train de sauter! Nous avons aussi eu la chance d'avoir un tour guidé du Olympic Centre, où s'entrainent des athlètes qui pratiquent des sports de glace.  

During our stay in Lake Placid, since Kat is a big fan of the Olympics, we visited a few Olympic venues from the past games held in Lake Placid. We saw the bobsled run and the ski jumps, where we actually saw athletes ski jumping! We also had a guided tour of the Olympic Centre, home of the famous "Miracle on Ice" 1980 USA vs USSR hockey game. Our tour guide was part of the bidding team for the 1980 Olympics and was about 80 years old. What a character! 

Ausable Chasm

Ausable Chasm, NY - 8 octobre 2013

For the first part of our vacation, we visited Ausable Chasm, where we were able to observe rock formations sculpted over thousands of years by the running water.

Pour la première partie de nos vacances, nous avons visité Ausable Chasm. Nous avons observé des formations rocheuses sculptés par l'érosion hydraulique pendant des milliers d'années.      

Le bloc de grès ci-dessous a une forme de tête d'éléphant, le résultat de deux zones de fissuration. 

Below is Elephant's Head, a massive block of sandstone that looks like the head and trunk of an elephant, caused by two major shear zones (faults).

We took the Inner Sanctum Trail, a two-mile hike which included natural stone walkways, man-made bridges and beautiful views of waterfalls and sandstone formations.

Nous avons emprunté le sentier "Inner Sanctum", une randonnée de 3 km formée d'escaliers, de ponts et de vues magnifiques de formations de grès.

Ce pont enjambe la rivière Ausable. Sous le pont, on peut voir les chutes qui alimentent la centrale hydroélectrique (à droite de la rivière).

This bridge looks over Ausable River. The waterfalls tumble into the chasm through a hydroelectric plant (building seen under the bridge).
