Natasha & Scott

Nos amis Natasha et Scott ainsi que leurs enfants Finn et Aida sont venus nous rendre visite de Kingston. Nous avons débuté la fin de semaine à Arbraska Rigaud, pour faire le parcours dans les arbres.

Our friends Natasha and Scott, along with their children Finn and Aida came to visit us for the weekend from Kingston. Everyone (except Katrine, who was working) began the weekend with a treetop adventure at Arbraska.

Le samedi nous sommes allé à la plage de Hudson, afin de profiter de la chaude et belle journée.

On Saturday, we went to Sandy Beach in nearby Hudson to take advantage of the hot and sunny day.

Then we stopped for some ice cream! Et ensuite nous sommes allés prendre une crème glacée!

That night: Twins in pyjamas! Ce soir-là: Des jumelles en pyjama!

Le dimanche, une belle promenade de vélo nous a mené à la base de plein air Les Forestiers, où les enfants ont pu s'amuser dans la piste d'hébertisme et dans les modules de jeux.

On Sunday, a lovely bike ride led us to the Forestiers Nature Park, where the kids tried out an obstacle course and played in the park.

Wescott Beach State Park

Pour le traditionnel camping de frères, nous sommes allés camper au Westcott Beach State Park, qui est situé dans l'état de New-York, à l'extrémité Est du lac Ontario. Nous avions réussi à obtenir trois emplacements au bord de l'eau, ce qui nous a permis de faire plein d'activités aquatiques: du voilier (le laser, qu'on voit sur la remorque), du kayak, du frisbee, de la planche à pagaie, etc.  Il a fait très beau le jeudi, vendredi et le lundi, mais moins samedi et dimanche. Malgré tout, nous avons réussi à faire des feux de camp à tous les soirs!

For this year's edition of the Casgrain Brothers Camping Trip, we went to Westcott Beach State Park, in New York State, on the eastern extremity of Lake Ontario. We reserved a long time ago, so we obtained three adjoining campsites along the water, allowing us to do many different water activities  together as a group and individually: sailboating (you can see the boat on the trailer in the picture below), stand-up paddle board, swimming, Frisbee, etc. It was very nice on Thursday and Friday, but Saturday and Sunday were rainy. We still managed to have a campfire every night, though!

Voyageur, Papanack et Carillon

Pour inaugurer la saison de camping 2018, nous avons décidé de ne pas s'aventurer trop loin de la maison: La région de Prescott-Russell en Ontario était parfaite pour notre aventure du week-end!

Nous avons débuté par une visite du zoo Papanack, qui a vu des jours meilleurs, mais bon...

To inaugurate the 2018 camping season, we decided not to venture too far away from home. Prescott-Russell county in Ontario was perfect for our weekend adventure!
We started with the Papanack Zoo, which has seen better days, but Julianne liked seeing the animals.

Nous sommes ensuite arrêté au vignoble Vankleek Hill, où nous avons pu non seulement gouter des vins mais aussi admirer une oeuvre d'art peinte par l'artiste Omen sur un ancien silo à grains. Il s'agit d'une des oeuvre du projet Popsilos, un leg du 150e anniversaire du Canada, qui vise à promouvoir les circuits agritouristiques de la région.

We then stopped at the Vankleek Hill Winery, where we not only sampled delicious wines, but also got to admire a work of art painted on a silo by an artist whose pen-name is Omen. It is one of many creations that is part of Popsilos, funded by the Canada 150 celebrations, which aims to promote agricultural tourism in the area. 

Voici l'information concernant ce silo en particulier:

OMEN a choisi d'illustrer la diversité à travers une représentation de l'écosystème créé par les propriétaires de Vankleek Hill Vineyard, Marty et Laurie Kral. Ceux-ci ont planté plus de 27 000 arbres depuis qu'ils ont acheté la terre! Cela a permis l'établissement d'un écosystème que de nombreux oiseaux (et d'autres animaux) utilisent comme habitat, notamment le corbeau. Les feuilles derrière le corbeau sont celles de différents arbres sur la propriété: orme, érable et chêne. Il faut des arbres de toutes sortes pour créer cet écosystème sain, où les cultures biologiques prospèrent. Il y a un parallèle à établir entre ce qui est possible lorsque vous créez un écosystème environnemental sain et la façon dont les Canadiens s'efforcent de façonner leur pays pour favoriser la diversité, là où les gens vivent harmonieusement.

Kruk signifie corbeau en polonais et Omen a choisi de nommer son travail Kruk car il est important pour lui, en tant que fils d'immigrants polonais. Il a aussi un attachement personnel aux corbeau

Here is the information regarding the work of art specifically: 

OMEN chose to illustrate diversity through a representation of the ecosystem that has been created by the Vankleek Hill Vineyard owners, Marty and Laurie Kral. They have planted over 27 000 trees since they bought the land! This has fostered an ecosystem of its own that many birds (and other animals) call home, namely the raven. The leaves behind the raven are those of different trees on the property: elm, maple and oak. It takes trees of all sorts to create this healthy ecosystem, where crops thrive organically. There's a parallel to be drawn between what’s possible when you create a healthy environmental ecosystem and how Canadians strive to shape their country to foster diversity, where people live harmoniously.

Kruk means raven in Polish and Omen chose to name his work Kruk as it is significant to him, son of Polish immigrants. He also has a personal attachment to ravens.

Par la suite nous nous sommes rendus au camping voyageur où nous avions déniché un très beau terrain en bordure de la rivière des Outaouais.

Then we went to our pretty waterfront campsite at Voyageur Provincial Park and had a bike ride.

C'est l'heure des guimauves! It's marshmallow time! 

Au matin, nous avons repris la route en direction de la centrale de Carillon. Nous sommes arrivés à 11h05, sans savoir qu'il fallait réserver pour faire la visite. Heureusement, un appel téléphonique nous informe qu'il y a une visite à 11h15 à laquelle nous pouvons assister! Les appareils photos étant interdits, nous n'avons pas de photos de Julianne avec son casque et ses lunettes de sécurité, mais elle était très mignonne et a très bien écouté les explications de notre guide Mollie. On y a appris notamment qu'il y a 17 centrales au fil de l'eau sur la rivière des Outaouais, dont la moitié appartiennent au Québec et l'autre à l'Ontario. Carillon est la plus puissante du groupe, avec 14 groupe turbine-alternateur.

In the morning, we headed back home, but not before making a few stops. First up: the Carillon Generating Station. We had a free tour - they started giving tours for the season on the very day that we arrived and we got a spot within minutes of phoning the number on the sign outside! Phones and photos were not permitted, so we don't have a picture of how cute Julianne was with her hard hat and safety glasses, helping our guide Mollie with her presentation by pressing on the buttons to light up the parts of the exhibit. Among the things that we learned: there are 17 generating stations along the Ottawa River, half of which belong to Québec and the other half to Ontario. Carillon is the most powerful of the groupe, with 14 generating units that are called Kaplan turbines.

Avec son écluse la plus haute au Canada, le canal de Carillon offre un arrêt spectaculaire. Munie d’une porte à guillotine de 200 tonnes, l’écluse permet aux embarcations de franchir une dénivellation de plus de 20 mètres.

With the highest locks in Canada, the Carillon canal offers spectacular views. With a guillotine door weighing 200 tons, the locks allow vessels to go up or down just over 20m to the other side.

Pour le trajet du retour, nous avons opté pour le traversier de Carillon.

For the return trip, we took the ferry boat, a 5-minute crossing. 

Un dernier arrêt avant le retour à la maison, chez Mikko à Hudson pour un brownies sans gluten et un café glacé: Le bonheur!

Balade en vélo et la Fête des mères/ Bike Ride and Mother's Day

On the Saturday before Mother's Day, we took a lovely bike ride in Pointe-des-Cascades on the bike path that follows  the Soulanges Canal. Julianne had only ever ridden in the chariot before on such a ride, but she was an active participant this time, with her bike attached to Nicolas' bike. 

Le samedi précédant la fête des mères, nous avons fait une belle balade à vélo à Pointe-des-Cascades sur la piste cyclable qui longe le canal Soulanges. Julianne était très heureuse sur son vélo attaché au vélo de Nicolas.

We came across a picturesque pond with birds and frogs. We stopped to take a break for a moment. 

Nous sommes tombés sur un étang pittoresque avec des oiseaux et des grenouilles. Nous nous sommes arrêtés pour faire une pause pendant un moment.

After the bike ride and a picnic lunch in a park, we wanted to try to find a winery in Les Cèdres, a local community near where we were and also near home. We had a wine tasting evening recently and one of the wines was from this local winery, and Katrine had also tasted another of their wines at an event in March. It was not what we expected from the outside... but the wine was delicious and the owner friendly. 

Après la balade à vélo et un pique-nique au parc des ancres, nous voulions essayer de trouver un vignoble locale, dans la municipalité de Les Cèdres. Nous avions assisté à une soirée de dégustation de vin récemment et l'un des vins était de cette entreprise. Katrine avait également goûté un autre de leurs vins lors d'un événement au Centre en mars. L'extérieur de la bâtisse était encore en construction, mais à l'intérieur nous avons été très bien accueilli et avons pu déguster les différents produits.

The wines sampled were great and we bought some to take home!

Next, we stopped at a nearby petting zoo, but it was mid-afternoon and the person at the front desk suggested that this was a place to spend a whole day seeing the animals, bouncing in the bouncy castle and having a picnic. So we just spent some time with the animals near the entrance and saved the rest for another day. Julianne could have spent all day with the goat! 

Ensuite, nous nous sommes arrêtés à une ferme, mais puisque c'était le milieu de l'après-midi, la personne à la réception a suggéré de prévoir plutôt d'y passer une journée entière, pour voir tous les animaux, s'amuser dans le château gonflable et pique-niquer. Ce sera donc partie remise! Julianne en a profité pour flatter les animaux près de l'entrée. Elle aurait pu passer toute la journée avec la chèvre!

The next day was Mother's Day. We were at Louise's house for most of the day, eating lunch, making bead necklaces, playing outside and also, Nicolas and Renaud hauled a Laser sailboat out of the basement garage to bring to the repair shop. On our way home, we stopped by Katrine's parent's house to give a Mother's Day present. What a great weekend!

Le lendemain, pour la fête des mères, nous sommes allé chez Mamie Louise pour le lunch. On en a profité pour fêter l'anniversaire de Renaud. Julianne a beaucoup aimé faire des colliers de perles et jouer avec ses cousins et cousines. Nicolas et Renaud ont sorti un voilier Laser du sous-sol pour le mettre dans le garage. Sur le chemin du retour, nous nous sommes arrêtés chez les parents de Katrine pour donner à Nana un cadeau pour la fête des Mères. Quel super week-end!
