In September, my good friend Natasha and I took a few days off work to spend time in nature in Val-Morin, which is North of Montreal. We rented a cottage, where we had access to bikes, kayaks and hiking trails. There was a lot of outdoor adventure going on during those few days!
The "P'tit train du Nord", which is a 234 km bicycle path that used to be an old railroad, passed right through where we were staying, so we could hop onto the trail rather easily. Each stop along the way used to be a train station at each of the villages from We used this trail to go into Val-David, to go the other direction into Val-Morin and also to go past Val-David to Ste-Agathe-des-Monts. My bike has seen better days and was quite uncomfortable, so eventually, I rented a bike on the day we went to Ste-Agathe, which was the best decision, it made the ride so much better!
We used the kayaks provided with the cottage to go down the Riviere du Nord to Lac Raymond, and our lovely Airbnb host picked us up at the end of our paddle to drive us back to the cottage. Surprisingly, it takes very little time to drive as compared to the long kayak ride, because the river winds back and forth.
Close to the Val-Morin stop on the bike trail was a good hiking spot, Mount McMaster. We were mostly all alone on this trail and we were rewarded at the top with an amazing view of Lac Raymond, which we had kayaked to the day before. Stunning! We also saw a deer in the forest and Natasha snuck a picture of it before it scampered away.
In fact, we saw a lot of wildlife, including this deer right on the bike trail - it did not seem to mind the people cycling by, but it wasn't interested in the apple that I threw in its direction. We also saw deer while walking in the evening in Val-Morin, and Natasha saw more deer while running in the early morning. We saw a ton of blue jays everywhere, Merganser ducks, a woodpecker (I tried get a picture, but it was too quick for me!) and chickadees... what a great place to just observe animals in their natural habitat!

One of the most surprising and serendipitous moments of the trip was when Katrine's bike (the one from the cottage, not the rental) had a flat tire and we were trying to use the pump provided, when a stranger approached us and offered to help. He had a bicycle pump in his car and he brought it back and while inflating the tire, he somehow started to talk about how he had worked for Hydro-Québec on the Environment team.... what were the odds! Not only did he know my father, he remembered him fondly and told me stories about him, he was so happy to be meeting me and to have news of my Dad. What a very strange coincidence!
Quelle belle rencontre!
Safe to say that we did a lot of physical activity every day, we were always very tired in the evening, but we also enjoyed our cottage that had a fireplace and a really nice homey feeling. We ended our trip with a breakfast at a well-known restaurant in the area, Le Petit Poucet, that is made to look very much like a Cabane à Sucre (Sugar Shack). Our time went by far too quickly. Time to book another adventure!
