C'est la Relâche! It's Spring Break!

 March Break came quickly, after a January that seemed to drag on forever. In Québec, most schools seemed to be on break during the first week of March. Without too much planning, we managed to do  a mix of indoor and outdoor activities, close to home and away from home, with friends and as a family. It was a nice break from the usual schedule!

La semaine de Relâche est arrivé assez rapidement, considérant que le moins de janvier semblait durer très longtemps.... Sans trop planifier d'avance, nous avons réussi de faire un mélange d'activités intérieures et extérieures, avec des amis et en famille, près de la maison et un peu loin aussi. C'était un beau repos de notre horaire habituel!

First up, the Winter Carnival at a local alpaca farm that also has horses, rabbits and donkeys. We could go for a dog sled ride, drink hot chocolate, pet the animals or play carnival games and warm up by a fire. We brought along Julianne's friend Lydia and the girls really enjoyed pushing each other on the kicksled (a kind of chair on a sled).

En premier, le Carnaval d'hiver à la ferme La Belle et ses Bêtes, qui a surtout des alpagas, mais aussi des lapins, des chevaux et des ânes. Nous avons nourri les alpagas, joué à des jeux, fait un tour en traineau à chien, et nous avons apporté Lydia, l'amie à Julianne, pour s'amuser avec nous. Les filles ont bien aimé le traineau.

Katrine s'est fait un ami! Katrine made a friend!

On the Monday, we went to select glasses frames for Julianne, who will soon be wearing glasses regularly. She chose very nice frames, picture coming soon, when her glasses are ready! Then, Nicolas and Katrine went cross-country skiing while Julianne went to a friend's house for the afternoon. 

Le lundi, Julianne a choisi sa monture de lunettes, car elle va maintenant porter des lunettes de façon plus régulière. Lorsqu'elle les aura reçu, on vous montrera le résultat final! Ensuite, elle est allée jouer chez une amie et Nicolas et Katrine sont allés fait du ski de fond. 

On the Tuesday, we set out for Ottawa, where we intended to skate on the canal and see a museum, and the weather determined in what order we carried out those activities. It was snowing on the canal and in our faces too, which made it more difficult to see where we were going! We did not skate as long as we could have in clearer weather, but we still made the most of the experience and a well-earned Beaver Tail ended the excursion. Then, we checked into our hotel (The Hyatt West) and made good use of the pool and the lounge area of our room (good for card games!). 

Mardi, nous sommes partis pour Ottawa, où nous avons planifié de visiter un musée et de patiner sur le canal. La météo a décidé l'ordre de nos activités. Il neigeait sur le canal et la visibilité n'était pas super bonne, donc nous n'avons pas patiné trop longtemps, mais assez de temps pour mériter une récompense à la fin. Ensuite, nous sommes partis pour notre hôtel

It turned out that a friend from Julianne's class was actually staying at the very same hotel, and the girls met up for breakfast and a swim before we started our day on Wednesday. This family comes to Ottawa for March break every year and has stayed at this hotel three times, so we must have made a pretty good choice!

Il s'est avéré qu'une amie de la classe de Julianne séjournait dans le même hôtel, et les filles se sont retrouvées pour un déjeuner et une baignade avant de commencer notre journée de mercredi. Cette famille vient à Ottawa pour la semaine de relâche chaque année et a séjourné dans cet hôtel trois fois ; nous avons donc dû faire un excellent choix !

We visited the Museum of Agriculture and Food, because we had never been before, we love animals and we knew there would be cooking demonstrations, which is always a bonus! There were so many animals and things to learn and see, from days-old lambs and kids (baby goats) to seeing the cows being fed, learning about canola crops, pretending to drive a tractor (the simulation was pretty cool), doing arts and crafts and of course, watching and eating the recipes in the Demonstration Kitchen! Katrine was even able to eat one of the creations. The presenter, Anne, was very knowledgeable, and Katrine was impressed that Anne could give a bilingual presentation about maple syrup production while measuring out ingredients, without skipping a beat! 

Nous avons visité le Musée de l'agriculture et de l'alimentation, car nous n'y étions jamais allés. Nous aimons les animaux et savions qu'il y aurait des démonstrations culinaires, ce qui est toujours un plus ! Il y avait tellement d'animaux et de choses à apprendre et à voir : des agneaux et des chevreaux d'un jour, voir les vaches se faire nourrir, découvrir la culture du canola, embarquer dans un simulateur de tracteur (c'était vraiment génial!), faire du bricolage et, bien sûr, regarder et déguster des recettes dans la cuisine de démonstration ! Katrine a même pu goûter à l'une des créations. La présentatrice, Anne, était très compétente, et Katrine a été impressionnée par sa capacité à faire une présentation bilingue sur la production de sirop d'érable tout en mesurant les ingrédients, sans faire d'erreur !

Pause bricolage! Arts and Crafts break! 

The following day was gray and rainy, so we went bowling and we brought along Julianne's friend Zara. We had a good time, but Zara beat all of us with her impressive bowling skills! And yes, she is very tall, if you can see it in the photo. We would say her height helps her bowl well, except that she had a better score than the two adults! 

Le lendemain, il faisait gris et pluvieux, alors nous sommes allés jouer au bowling avec Zara, l'amie de Julianne. On s'est bien amusés, mais Zara nous a tous battus grâce à son talent impressionnant ! Et oui, elle est très grande, comme vous pouvez le voir sur la photo. On dirait que sa taille l'aide à bien jouer, sauf qu'elle a fait un meilleur score que les deux adultes !

Katrine and Julianne went sledding at a nearby hill /frozen lake while Nicolas went for a ride on his fatbike. 

Pour terminer la semaine, Katrine et Julianne sont allées glisser sur une colline menant à un lac gelé à proximité tandis que Nicolas est allé faire une ballade sur son fatbike.

Il faisait un peu froid dehors... It was a little bit cold outside...

Une visite chez Tim Hortons pour se réchauffer après une belle sortie! A visit to Tim Horton's was a good idea after the cold and windy sledding outside.
